What Do Salmon Living On A Farm Eat?

You are what you eat – that’s how the famous saying goes. But here at Kvaroy Arctic, we expand this question by asking: do you know what your food eats? It’s an important question because we are literally consuming what our food has been munching on.

So what do our salmon eat?

Of all our sustainable efforts in farming salmon, perhaps none is as impactful as our devotion to preparing a healthier and more environmentally-friendly feed for our fish.

We feed our salmon with food that has no GMOs and is made with traceable ingredients. In fact, below is the full recipe for the food we prepare to feed our salmon!

Guar protein from North India

Guar is a legume with a lower environmental footprint (link to carbon article) compared to other vegetable proteins. It helps our salmon to digest their food better.

Rapeseed oil from North Caucasus

Rapeseed is a bright yellow, oil-rich flowering member of the family of mustard and cabbage. It is one of the oldest known vegetable oils. We use it for feeding our salmon because it is rich in marine fatty acid DHA (Dive into this article for more details about mighty Omega-3’s - link). Rapeseeds are used also to feed honey bees!

Wheat starch and protein from Germany

Wheat is the most important crop used for making cereal! It is mainly grown for feeding humans and animals. Just like you have some cereal for breakfast, our salmon has a bit of it too! It’s packed with energy and is valuable for the growth of healthy fish.

Fish oil from our Norwegian sea

Salmon also need fish oil because of its heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Our fish oil is made from herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines. Yum!

Soy protein from the Donau area

Soy protein is considered the most nutritious plant ingredient. It has a well-balanced amino acid profile, which is beneficial to the growth of our salmon.

Fishmeal from Norwegian sea

Salmon need their vitamins too! Fishmeal is important because it contains many of the micronutrients required for the fish to thrive. That includes a number of essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals, which are not that abundantly found in vegetables.

Pea starch and protein from France

Pea starch and pea protein are considered to be very rich in protein and high-energy feed ingredients for our salmon.

Camelina oil from North Caucasus

Camelina is historically cultivated as an oilseed crop raised to produce vegetable oil and animal feed. It contains the exact fatty acid composition that our salmon needs. Camelina oil enhances the ability of fish to absorb omega-3 fatty acids that are needed for their optimal growth.

Krill from South Atlantic

Looking like smaller versions of prawns or lobsters, Antarctic krill is one of the most abundant animal species on the planet. They are frequently found swimming in such massive groups together that they color the sea a reddish-brown. They are a rich source of vitamin A.

Algaprime from South Brazil

This is microalgae rich in omega-3s, which helps salmon develop faster and produce better, tastier fillets.

So now you know the special meal we prepare for our Kvaroy salmon — AND the nutrients that you get when you enjoy our fillets, burgers, dogs, and smoked fish!
