9 Holiday Decorations Your Family Can Craft at Home

We love homemade craft ideas for Christmas. Quite often, they are very sustainable because we end up repurposing objects we have or can find easily in nature around us. We collected some of our favorite crafty staples for Christmas decorations that can be made at home.

Whether you have a Christmas tree or prefer to custom-make your own creative interpretation of a tree, the following suggestions embody koselig, can be beautifully minimalistic, and won't create much waste after the holidays are over.

Getting inspiration from nature is important to us and it's also a vital part of the koselig concept. Here at Kvaroy, we also enjoy utilizing the shells of oysters and mussels! With a little bit of paint, glue, and glitter, they can get transformed into unique Christmas ornaments.

But let's start with our all-time favorite — pine cones! Pine cones are such a beautiful natural symbol of the holiday season and you can decorate your home with them in so many different ways! You can paint them white, gold, or red. You can arrange them into a Christmas tree made of pine cones. Use your imagination, do a little research for inspiration, and get creative! Another favorite: Anything made of felt! Felt is super easy to play with. You can cut out different shapes and glue them together. Your soft and cozy creations won’t break, and they're super easy to store for the next year.

This next decoration idea smells so deliciously fresh, brings the bright and yummy colors of nature to your home, and can be composted afterward! Yes, we are talking about dried citrus slices that can be made of oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit. They are super light, and when connected with a cord, can be hung anywhere at home—even on the walls. Cut into thin slices, dry in the oven, and voila!

Another natural resource we can utilize are the tiny wooden sticks from fallen branches in the park next to you. Again, just by using a cord and glue, you can create natural-looking stars.

One more nature-based suggestion! Use cranberries (a winter superfood) and one-day-old popcorn to create popcorn garlands. Learn more about this tradition here.

If you live at the shore by the sea or the ocean, or if you have collected shells during the summer holidays, you can turn them into an outstanding decoration that will also bring marine vibes and beach memories. Follow this seashell Christmas tutorial.

And two unusual but lovely ideas:

The can lids from our smoked salmon cans can be transformed into hanging ornaments when dressed with felt or a cord. Have a look at these helpful tutorials by The Creative Glow and by Home Talk.

Finally, if you have some old light bulbs at home, you can repurpose them and repaint them in gold or silver, and glue glitter, wool, or cotton onto them.
